Missionary Travels

I recently traveled to Okinawa, Japan to share our one year report with our home church.  Nick Guerra returned with me to the Philippines so we could conduct the site survey for the upcoming medical and dental mission.

What a voyage!

We arrived on the island of Negros first so I could touch bases with home, drop off my luggage and survey some sites locally for the upcoming mission.

We hit the ground running with a lunch with mission supporters just hours after landing in Bacolod.  We then visited the area where many of our church members come from.

The next morning we met with the health officials of Silay City and they took us to what they referred to as "the most depressed area in Silay".  When we arrived, I said "this is the same place we visited yesterday ... the area where most of our church members come from".

I knew they came from a depressed area, I did not know it was the "most depressed" area.

The following day we ventured into the mountains to view another potential site.

Nick spoke at our church Sunday morning, and we left almost immediately afterwards to take a one hour boat ride to Ilo Ilo.

Our destination was Romblon, an isolated island that would require multiple methods of travel and a hardy investment of our time.

After the one hour boat ride we endured a five hour van ride and spent the night in Cataclan. The next morning we boarded a boat for a three hour boat ride to the island of Looc.

Upon arrival in Looc we took a short trike ride to our jeepney. We spent close to three hours crammed in the jeepney on our way to San Angustin.

On the way to San Angustin we tried to formulate our extract plans for Romblon. Travels to remote areas are sketchy as best. We were told there was a flight leaving Tuesday (which would have required four hours travel to get to), and then we were told there was no flight Tuesday.

We were then told there was a ship leaving Wednesday, only to find out later that it left Tuesday.
We pressed on to Romblon.

After the jeepney ride we had to rent a pump boat for the last leg of the trip … a one and a half hour boat ride into Romblon.

The journey was well worth it!

The following day we arrived at Pastor Ronaldo's church tucked away in the mountains. His members greeted us there, and we joined in a few worship songs with them.

After a quick visit we departed for the port where we boarded a ship for a twelve hour ship ride to Batangas.

The ship ride was long, loud and cramped. Upon arrival in Batangas we took a three hour van ride to Manila. The ship arrived at the port at 0300 in the morning, and we had to catch a 0900 flight to the island of Palawan.

Upon arrival in Palawan we were met by Pastor Rene who took us to three potential sites for the medical mission.
